‘Discord’ Became a Hub for Everything from Petrol Bomb-Making to Rumors :Report
Kathmandu — The report of the commission formed to investigate the Gen-Z movement of Bhadra 23 and the protests on Bhadra 24 has concluded that the digital platform Discord became a central medium for organizing and expanding the protests.
According to the report, the details included in it have further supported the questions and suspicions previously raised in reports published by Kantipur. The commission has even cited Kantipur as a source regarding the communications and activities that took place on ‘Discord’.
The report states that the platform was widely used to coordinate protest activities, share messages, and mobilize participants. It also mentions that conversations on ‘Discord’ included discussions about making petrol bombs, sharing violent messages, spreading rumors, and encouraging attacks on the police.
Earlier, Kantipur had raised questions about the materials used in the arson incidents and the background behind them. The commission’s report has now expanded those concerns from a digital perspective by presenting online communications on ‘Discord’ as supporting evidence.
The report concludes that misinformation and violent content circulated through digital platforms played a significant role in escalating tensions during the protests. 📰📱
