Oli’s comments come amid a broader electoral shift in Nepal’s political landscape
Kathmandu — Former Prime Minister and CPN‑UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has acknowledged that the results of the recent election did not meet his expectations and has pledged to respect the will of the people.
Oli said that he did not secure the outcome he had hoped for in this election, and that his party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), also fell short of the results it aimed to achieve. “In a democracy, the final decision rests with the people, and accepting that decision is both my duty and that of my party,” he wrote on social media after the final results were announced. Oli emphasized that he fully respects the voters’ choice and is committed to upholding democratic principles.
He extended his gratitude to the voters, party leaders, workers, volunteers, and supporters who cast their ballots under the party’s “Sun” election symbol and stood by the party during the campaign.
Oli’s comments come amid a broader electoral shift in Nepal’s political landscape, where newer and emerging political forces have made significant gains, challenging the traditional parties that have long dominated Nepalese politics. The election saw notable defeats for senior leaders of established parties, including Oli himself, who lost his constituency race — a rare setback for the veteran politician.
Observers say Oli’s acknowledgement of the results and commitment to democratic norms reflects both political reality and the changing aspirations of Nepal’s electorate, especially as younger and independent leaders rise to prominence.
